DOT Physicals

Need a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam?

DOT physical exams are a critical step in ensuring the safe driving of those operating commercial vehicles in Nebraska and throughout the USA. Our Elkhorn office offers these medical exams for the convenience and safety of our community, working with both employers and individuals.

Who needs a DOT exam?

You’ll need to pass a DOT medical exam if:

  • You are paid to drive a vehicle carrying at least eight people

  • You operate a large vehicle carrying over 15 people

  • You transport hazardous materials

  • You drive a vehicle for commerce purposes between states, and the vehicle weighs over 10,000 pounds (while loaded)

We work with corporations and individuals who need DOT exams for:

  • School bus driving

  • School-associated large vehicle driving

  • Tow trucks

  • Commercial truck drivers

  • City bus operators

  • By law, all commercial motor vehicle drivers require an initial DOT exam and regular physical exams. The frequency of examinations depends on your medical history, medication use, and examination findings. Certain conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure, mood disorders, and others, require more frequent monitoring to ensure safe driving.

The longest someone can be certified for is two years. Dr. Nolan Clausen and Dr. Ryan Anson are both FMCSA Certified Medical Examiners and able to perform your DOT physical to ensure your safety or the safety of your employees while driving.

  • Feel free to fill out the necessary paperwork at home before your exam. This may include our clinic forms and the driver’s portion of the exam. You will receive these documents upon booking your physical.

Part of the physical exam includes a urine test, so we also recommend coming to your appointment with a full bladder, ready to provide a urine sample.

We suggest that you bring any of the following that apply to you:

A list of any medications you are on and the dosage

A list of any doctors you work with- name, phone, address

If diabetic, your blood sugar reading or most recent HbA1C

If you have sleep apnea, a record from your CPAP machine over the last 90 days

    Your glasses or contacts

    Your hearing aids

If you have heart issues, a letter from your cardiologist saying you’re safe to drive and results of any recent heart-related tests

If you’ve lost the use of an arm or leg, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

If you take medications that cause sleepiness or are considered a controlled substance, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

If you’ve had a stroke, brain tumor, suffer from seizures, or bleeding in the brain, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

  • Conditions that may disqualify you from a DOT card include:

    Unstable heart condition

    Seizure disorders

    Epilepsy

    Inner ear disorder

    Diabetes

    High blood pressure

    Vision impairment

    Hearing impairment

    Marijuana use

    Illegal substance abuse

    Respiratory conditions

The severity of these conditions varies, so it’s important to work with an experienced FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner to ensure your safety and eligibility.

  • Make healthy choices starting now- eat well, get exercise, drink water, get enough sleep

Take your prescribed medications and adhere to your doctor’s advice

Be honest when answering your examiner’s questions

Bring all necessary paperwork to your exam

If you’re not healthy or could jeopardize your life and the lives of others, commercial driving is not a wise choice for you. We want to help you succeed, and our FMCSA-certified medical examiners are on your team.
